Chair Yoga. What is it, and how can it benefit every body (and mind)?

For those who’ve not experienced it first hand, we wanted to share an overview of the what, why and how of Chair Yoga.

Many people – due to disability, injury, mental health concerns, or simply aging – find traditional yoga classes challenging. Also, for the less-abled the act of getting down to the mat or back up can be difficult.

Working with a chair, and sometimes props, allows yoga's therapeutic practices to be accessible for people with limited mobility or those lacking confidence. Simple adaptations mean that it opens a whole new level of inclusivity, providing a safe way to exercise and move.

A chair provides a stable base for those with limited mobility and adapts to various physical needs. It compensates for balance or strength limitations, empowering participants to move with more confidence.

By simplifying yoga stretches and movements, making them user-friendly participants can explore their full potential and become stronger – physically, emotionally, and psychologically. Incorporating effective and easy-to-follow yoga postures into a chair-based practice, promotes increased independence, positivity, and confidence.

Watch below to see how Special Yoga Chair Yoga Senior Practitioner, Richard Kravetz adapts a Sun Salutation for a chair based practice.

Richard will be running Chair Yoga single day webinar on June 9th. Click below to book.

The workshop will explore over 100 stretches and movements, modifications and prohibitions, both seated and standing with the chair for balance support.
